District Superintendent Services

The District Superintendent provides BOCES-wide educational and related managerial support services. In addition to his responsibilities as Chief Executive Officer of the Board of Cooperative Educational Services, he provides services to the local school districts and the State Education Department. These services include:

Liaison: The District Superintendent:

Serves as the field representative of the Commissioner of Education;

Facilitates communication between districts and the State Education Department, as well as other public and private agencies;

Interprets and clarifies Commissioner's regulation, Regent rules, Education Law, statewide initiatives and other policies that have an impact on education.

Selection of a School Superintendent and/or Administrative Staff:

The District Superintendent is available, upon request, to act as a consultant and to assist a Board of Education in the selection of a Superintendent of Schools or other administrative positions. These Services may include:

  • the development of criteria
  • recruiting and screening of candidates
  • assisting in the interview process, etc.

Consultation:

The District Superintendent is available to consult with school districts on a variety of educational and administrative issues including, but not limited to:

  • School Improvement Initiatives
  • Board-Administration Relationships
  • Management and Planning
  • Reorganization and Merger
  • School Boundaries
  • Staffing Patterns

The District Superintendent is able to call on the resources of the State Education Department and the BOCES professional staff if needed in addressing these and other issues.

Coordination:

The District Superintendent coordinates programs, initiatives and partnerships on behalf of participating school, state and community organizations. These include:

  • Interagency Collaboration
  • Orange County Partners for Children
  • Children's Museum
  • College Articulation between OCCC and BOCES
  • Eating Disorders Task Force

These services are provided through the BOCES administrative budget at no additional cost to the component districts.
