Orange-Ulster BOCES Proudly Honors Practical Nurse Graduates

LPN Grad

On Tuesday, June 23rd Orange-Ulster BOCES honored fifty-five Practical Nursing (PN) students in a candlelight ceremony celebrating the culmination of more than 1100 hours in classroom, lab and clinical instruction.

Orange County Executive Edward Diana was on hand to address the class and their families and friends who filled the auditorium at the Orange-Ulster BOCES Emanuel Axelrod Education Center in Goshen. He praised the nurses for their noble career choice and spoke of the critical need in the region for skilled health care providers. Patricia M. Henault RN, BSN CGRN, a former LPN who is currently working as an RN at Orange Regional Medical Center, gave the keynote address.

The ceremony was highlighted with student speakers Elan Bonnema, part-time student of Middletown and Lisa Maldonado, a full-time student from Middletown who addressed the audience on behalf of their classmates. Lisa Maldonado received the Outstanding Academic Award for Full-Time Students, while Amy Conklin of Westtown was the recipient of the Outstanding Clinical Award for Full-Time.  The Academic Excellence Award for Part-Time Students was presented to Ruthellen Carozza of Milford, PA and the Clinical Excellence Award for Part-Time Students was awarded to Jaimee Sullivan of Florida, NY.

The Orange-Ulster BOCES Practical Nursing Program is approved by the New York State Education Department Board of Regents. The objective of the program is to provide students with the opportunity to acquire nursing knowledge and skills and to meet the requirements necessary to sit for the New York State Board Examination in Practical Nursing. The graduates gained an in-depth understanding of health across the continuum, age-specific care, basic needs of patients and the role and responsibilities of the practical nurse in all health care settings.
