About the Program:

The Principles of Health Careers program is taken during the student’s junior year and is the first year of the Allied Health Assistant, Nurse Assistant, and the Practical Nurse programs. Students begin by studying the core competencies that are relevant to many health occupations. Having mastered the core competencies, students progress to an advanced level to develop competencies specific to selected occupational areas. The students will also be given an opportunity to explore various health care fields.

Integrated throughout the two years of instruction are theoretical concepts, skills and attitudes that help the student to become successful in gaining employment and/or continuing their education.

Additional Information:

Students are required to have an annual physical examination and appropriate immunizations prior to participating in clinical. Financial assistance is available to students who qualify.

Students completing Principles of Health Careers may choose to enter Allied Health, Nurse Assistant or Practical Nursing I their second year if they have met the following requirements:

  1. Received a 65% average in Principles of Health Careers in order to be recommended to enter Allied Health.
  2. Received a 65% average in Principles of Health Careers in order to be recommended to enter Nurse Assistant.
  3. Received an 85% average in Principles of Health Careers in order to be recommended to enter Practical Nursing I. The student must also take the Test of Adult Basic Education and the Essential Academic Skills Exam and must have a 55% on the Math and 70% on the English sections of this exam in order to move to Practical Nursing.
