Arts in Education

The Arts in Education Co-Ser is an invaluable service in the dissemination of educational resources available statewide as well as in and around this region. The Co-Ser is instrumental in helping teachers connect these resources and design and evaluate the ways these resources impact the classroom.

Curriculum Development

Select from ELA, Science and Social Studies curriculum

e-Learning

The e-Learning Experience consists of a variety of instructional and staff development applications utilizing currently available technologies. This Co-Ser supports strategies including, but not limited to, videoconferencing, electronic field-trips, project-based instructional activities between two or more sites, and much more.

Extra-Curricular Activities

This service consists of Odyssey of the Mind, Mock Trials, Youth-in-Government and Senior Enrichment.

JASON Project

A nonprofit subsidiary of the National Geographic Society, JASON connects young students with great explorers and great events to inspire and motivate them to learn science. Its core curriculum units are designed for 5th – 8th grade classrooms but are flexible enough to be adapted for higher or lower grades.

Mandarin Chinese

This e-Learning experience provides Mandarin Chinese language instruction utilizing a variety of technologies including videoconferencing to contact classrooms and other locations in China, and to facilitate projects among participating schools. The use of iPods provides language exercises through specific downloads. This initiative is designed to introduce students to written and spoken Mandarin Chinese and exploration of Chinese culture. Younger students (K-5) learn about Chinese culture through immersion experiences, while instruction in mandarin Chinese is incorporated at the middle levels, grades 6 – 8.

Model Schools

The Model Schools Program provides training and support to assist school districts in the effective integration of technology with instruction to improve student achievement and support the New York State Learning Standards and Assessments.

Outdoor Education

A variety of programs are offered to school districts to promote the teaching of all curricula in the out-of-doors, to develop environmental awareness and conservation, and to improve the atmosphere of learning and social relationships.

Professional Development

The Office of Professional Development exists to support component districts in planning and implementing the highest caliber of research-based staff development and program implementation to meet the New York State Standards.

Senior Enrichment

Throughout the school year, the Senior Enrichment Program exposes the academically talented senior students of Orange County to a variety of stimulating experiences and presentations.

Science Kits

The NY State Math, Science and Technology Learning Standards stress a hands-on and minds-on approach. "Critical to understanding science concepts is the use of scientific inquiry to develop explanations of natural phenomena. It is recommended that students have the opportunity to develop their skills of analysis, inquiry, and design through active investigations in grades K,1,2,3,4 and through active laboratory work in grades 5,6,7,8 on a regular basis." To support the MST Learning Standards, the Orange-Ulster BOCES maintains a system of preparation, maintenance, distribution and ordering of Elementary/Intermediate Instructional Kits and the Star Lab.

Shared Staff

The Orange-Ulster Board of Cooperative Educational Services provides an instructional service to the component districts through the use of shared teachers. This program provides teachers and administrators with support services, which enhance and upgrade educational programs.

Teacher Tools

The Model Schools Emerging Technologies Research Group seeks to bring together K-12 educators interested in experimenting with the latest developments in instructional technology, learn instructional strategies that support learning in all academic fields, and enjoy the pleasures of working in an ongoing professional learning community.
