About The School Library System
Orange-Ulster BOCES School Library System Goals:
• To support school libraries with their role in fostering student achievement.
• To promote reading and literacy in the region.
• To encourage the sharing of resources.
• To provide technical assistance and effective professional development for school library and teaching staff.
• To promote cooperation among all types of libraries across the State.
• To increase access to print and electronic information.
• To promote school libraries and their services to the community.

The School Library System promotes student achievement by providing the school library media centers of 91 public and 21 private schools in Orange and Ulster counties with:
• Professional development for library and teaching staff.
• Development and maintenance of an automated Union Catalog.
• Resource sharing among schools and other libraries through interlibrary loan via SEAL and OCLC.
• Building and sharing specialized collections through Cooperative Collection Development.
• Coordination of access to commercial online databases and those available at no cost through NOVEL.
• Dissemination of current information concerning libraries and literacy to schools.
• Access to an instructional Media Library.
• Events to promote literacy such as the Great New York ReadAloud and the Orange County Spelling Contest.
