At the John A. Flannery Junior High School, all students are given an opportunity for growth. It is the goal of the John A. Flannery Junior High School to develop the whole student, mentally, physically, socially and emotionally. In meeting Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and diploma criteria, our teachers modify and adapt the course material to satisfy or exceed curriculum requirements. It is the intention of every faculty member to motivate students to perform to his or her maximum potential.
Class Size and Student Offerings
6:1+1 Classes: This is the maximum class size for students whose management needs interfere with the instructional process. Students whose management needs are intensive and require a greater degree of individualized attention are served within this classroom ratio.
SPARC - Supplemental Programming for At-Risk Students: This 8:1+1 option is designed for non-classified students ages 11 to 14 who have displayed behaviors that interfere with the learning environment and their abilities to benefit from the traditional educational environment. These students are referred by their home school building principal or Committee on Special Education.
Through a smaller class with individualized behavior plans and curriculum adaptations and modifications, SPARC provides students with a supportive setting to reduce at-risk behaviors so they are able to meet their home school’s academic expectations. Other features of SPARC include parental involvement, services from BOCES Special Education and Support Staff and referral to community agencies such as Mental Health, Social Services, etc.
