Class Size and Student Offerings

6:1+1 Classes: These classes provide comprehensive instructional, social and behavior management programming for students who demonstrate severe learning and emotional disabilities. These students typically present the need for highly structured classes, individual as well as classroom management programs, crisis intervention and intensive clinical involvement.

8:1+1 Classes: These classes are for students who have moderate to severe academic, social and behavior management needs. These students benefit from small group instruction and additional support services such as speech, physical therapy, occupational therapy and counseling as recommended on their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). The objective of these classes is to provide the necessary programming to insure the successful return of these students to a district-based general education class.

IDT: Classes are for students who require support transitioning from clinical settings to the classroom setting. IDT classes at Liberty Street School service both classified and nonclassified elementary students. The IDT classrooms are supported by staff from Rockland Children Psychiatric Center and provide a therapeutic environment for students to succeed.

SPARC: (Supplemental Programming for At-Risk Children). The Elementary SPARC class provides students with a supportive environment, behavior management, and educational tutoring to reduce at-risk behaviors and meet the home school’s academic expectations. Classroom programming also provides daily group counseling to discuss students’ feelings and behaviors to encourage making personal changes related to their return to the home district. SPARC is designed to offer a supplemental emotional and academic support system to non-classified students ages 5 through 11 years old. Prior to entering SPARC, these students have displayed behaviors that interfere with the learning environment and their abilities to benefit from it. Students are not classified and attend up to 90 days.

The program is short-term and transitional, yet comprehensive, linking the family, the home school district and community-based services. A staff comprised of highly trained professionals work intensely with a group of up to 8 students.

Growth in students’ personal and emotional development

Decrease in the number of students classified due to behavioral and emotional difficulties

Preparation of students to transition back to the general educational settings

Reinforcement of developmental academic skills

Decrease in the number of suspensions from school.
