Chester Learning Center Awarded Mix
It Up Grant
The Chester Learning Center is the recent recipient of a Mix It Up Grant that will be used to purchase books to add to the library at the CLC. The students who are enrolled in CLC researched and eventually selected a list of books that promote social understanding and diminish boundaries between students with differences in ethnic, social, economic and academic areas. The purpose of obtaining these books is to continue the ongoing efforts of the staff at CLC to assist young people in embracing diversity and developing positive core values, as well as hopefully to go a step further by becoming adults who will constructively influence the world in which they live. Older students will utilize these books to expand upon the current “Read Aloud to Friends” program at the Center, and counselors, teachers and staff will also have access to these books to enlighten the topics of equality, religion, prejudice, disabilities, social history, conflict resolution and tolerance of others. The grant is funded by the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama.
